Breaking the Mould: Sculpture by Women since 1945

Breaking the Mould is the first extensive survey of post-war British sculpture by artists identifying as women in a public institution.
Sarah Lucas (born 1962) is an English artist. She is part of the generation of Young British Artists who emerged in 1988. Her works frequently employ visual puns and bawdy humour by incorporating photography, sculpture, collage and found objects.
Drawing inspiration from art history, Lucas cleverly incorporates toilet bowls, reminiscent of Duchamp’s iconic urinal, into her works – a seamless integration of the ready-made concept.
Intriguingly, her figures remain headless, with only the artist’s face appearing repeatedly through a sequence of captivating self-portraits. Stained mattresses and furniture act as unique plinths, juxtaposed against surreal domestic wallpapers.

Arriving in Venice for the vernissage days whilst elections were in full swing, I was surprised to be confronted by a politically charged Biennale. Colonialism, Capitalism, Socialism, contemporary slavery and migration were some of the themes running through the 56th Edition of La Biennale di Venezia, which opened not long after a period of several weeks during which more than 1,800 migrants – many of them African – drowned whilst attempting to flee across the Mediterranean to Europe..

There was a party atmosphere last night at the Zabludowicz Collection, celebrating their 20 years. The well healed mixed happily with young artists who were mostly milling around the bar and the food van. Inside we were treated to some highlights from the collection, we had important pieces by Sarah Lucas, Tracey Emin, Damian Hirst, Maria Lassnig, Sigmar Polke, Martin Creed and Rachel Whiteread.
