Gavin Turk (b. 1967, Guildford, UK) is known for his sly, shape-shifting practice that questions authorship, authenticity, and the myth of the artist. Emerging from the YBA movement in the 1990s, he first made headlines for his degree show installation Cave—a whitewashed studio space marked only by a blue heritage plaque declaring “Gavin Turk worked here, 1989–1991.” Since then, his work has continued to play with identity and iconography, reimagining cultural symbols from Warhol to waste materials. Through sculpture, painting, and performance, Turk blurs art and artifice, transforming self-portraiture into a mirror of contemporary fame and value.
