Georg Baselitz: Born in 1938 in Deutschbaselitz, Saxony, Georg Baselitz has forged a remarkable six-decade career, exploring the intricacies of representing the human figure in art. His extensive body of work spans painting, sculpture, drawings, and prints, deeply rooted in the post-World War II German context. Originally named Hans-Georg Kern, he adopted his name from his birthplace, Deutschbaselitz, a small village in Saxony, eastern Germany. In the 1950s, he briefly delved into Social Realism in East Berlin before transitioning to West Berlin, where he encountered abstract art. Ultimately, he carved out his unique style, famously inverting the human form from 1969 onwards.
Georg Baselitz’s work has stirred controversy, notably in the 1960s with provocative paintings and in the 1980s with his sculptural practice, influencing subsequent generations of artists with a nuanced approach. His creations engage with the evolving debates around national identity, aesthetic frameworks, and the human condition in the latter half of the 20th century.
Baselitz resides and creates near Salzburg, Austria, Lake Ammersee, Germany, and Imperia, Italy. He has exhibited widely, with solo showcases at prestigious institutions, such as Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (2023), The Morgan Library & Museum in New York (2022), and Museo di Palazzo Grimani in Venice (2022), among others. His impact extends to significant group exhibitions, including those at the 56th, 52nd, and 39th Venice Biennale and acclaimed institutions like the British Museum, Royal Academy of Arts, and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

The past few years have tended to see Georg Baselitz in fine, adventurous form, at least in the studio (less so in the interview room, where his ludicrous generalisations about female painters have tended to put people off). And you have to hand it to him here: well into his ninth decade, Baselitz has come up with a series of works quite unlike anything he has done before – a whole show of hands, many of them monumental
