Alexander Calder revolutionised modern sculpture through his pioneering use of movement, becoming one of the defining figures of twentieth-century art. Best known for inventing the mobile—kinetic sculptures animated by air currents—and the stabile, his monumental static works, Calder transformed sculpture from a fixed object into a dynamic experience. Combining engineering, abstraction and playfulness, his work introduced a new visual language that continues to influence artists, architects and designers around the world.
Born in Pennsylvania in 1898 into a family of artists, Calder initially trained as a mechanical engineer before turning to art, a background that profoundly shaped his practice. After moving to Paris in the 1920s, he became associated with the European avant-garde, developing friendships with artists including Joan Miró, Piet Mondrian and Marcel Duchamp, the latter famously coining the term “mobile” to describe Calder’s moving sculptures. His innovative use of balance, gravity and motion redefined the possibilities of sculpture, allowing forms to shift continually in response to their environment.
Alongside his celebrated mobiles, Calder worked across sculpture, painting, drawing, jewellery and monumental public commissions. Whether creating delicate suspended compositions or large-scale steel stabiles for public spaces, his work explored the relationships between form, space, movement and chance. Inspired by the rhythms of nature, the cosmos and the invisible forces that shape the physical world, Calder created works that appear both technically precise and effortlessly playful.
Calder’s work has been exhibited at major museums worldwide and is held in leading collections including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art; Tate; Centre Pompidou; and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Through a career that transformed the language of modern sculpture, Alexander Calder established a legacy that continues to shape contemporary art, demonstrating how movement itself can become a sculptural medium.

I visited the current recipient, Alice Anderson, and it was immediately obvious what can be gained. The spacious house is isolated in a classic Loire Valley landscape. The natural world, from which Calder abstracted many of his forms, is right up close through the extensive windows of the thirty-metre long studio. Not surprisingly, Anderson is taking the chance to work on a larger scale..
