Specifically young and emerging galleries — or those not as yet run ragged in an attempt to stay on the art world’s hamster wheel.
Larry Achiampong (b. 1984, London, UK) works across film, sound, performance, text and installation to examine postcolonial identity, power and the afterlives of empire. Drawing on his Ghanaian heritage and lived experience in Britain, he constructs layered narratives that move between personal reflection and collective history. His work often unfolds through episodic structures—voiceovers, fragmented texts, recurring characters—allowing stories to accumulate rather than resolve.
Achiampong’s practice is marked by a careful balance of intimacy and critique. Music, gaming culture, spoken word and archival material intersect within immersive environments that feel both speculative and grounded. He frequently adopts alter egos or fictional frameworks to explore how Black British identities are shaped, constrained and imagined within dominant cultural systems.
Attuned to questions of visibility, belonging and resistance, Achiampong treats art as a space for listening as much as looking. His works invite viewers into moments of pause and attention, where history is not fixed but continually re-voiced, and where cultural memory becomes an active, living presence.
