Raging storms, concealment, birdsong, vultures and the power of art.
Elmgreen & Dragset are an artist duo—Michael Elmgreen (b. 1961, Copenhagen) and Ingar Dragset (b. 1969, Trondheim)—known for transforming architecture and public space into sites of narrative, satire and quiet dislocation. Working across sculpture, installation and performance, they stage environments that look familiar yet feel subtly wrong: empty swimming pools, abandoned boutiques, fake apartments, misplaced monuments.
Their works operate like frozen scenes from unwritten stories. A luxury store becomes a crime scene; a park bench suggests a life just departed. By manipulating everyday spaces, Elmgreen & Dragset expose the social codes embedded in architecture—class, sexuality, power, aspiration—allowing viewers to read the built world as a psychological map.
Humour and melancholy run side by side through their practice. While their projects often appear playful or theatrical, they carry a deeper inquiry into belonging, visibility and the ways identities are performed. Whether working in galleries, museums or city streets, Elmgreen & Dragset turn spatial design into a form of storytelling, inviting audiences to step inside and fill in the gaps.
