The National Portrait Gallery is set to mark the centenary of Marilyn Monroe with a major exhibition
Richard Avedon (1923–2004, New York City, USA) reshaped modern photography with an approach that fused elegance, psychological intensity and formal precision. Renowned for his fashion and portrait photography, he stripped subjects of context—often against stark white backgrounds—bringing gesture, expression and presence into sharp focus. His images capture movement as much as likeness, turning the photograph into an encounter rather than a record.
Avedon’s portraits span cultural worlds: artists, politicians, performers, writers and ordinary individuals rendered with the same unflinching clarity. His landmark series In the American West pushed portraiture beyond glamour, confronting viewers with faces marked by labour, vulnerability and endurance. Throughout his career, he used the camera to probe identity, power and performance, revealing how selfhood is constructed under scrutiny.
Meticulous yet emotionally charged, Avedon’s work balances control with exposure. His photographs remain iconic not simply for their visual authority, but for their insistence on seeing—fully, directly, and without comfort—how people inhabit their own image.
