Frieze today unveiled highlights of Frieze Seoul 2023, returning to COEX in the Gangnam district of the city from September 6th – 9th, 2023.
Lawrence Weiner (1942–2021) was a pivotal figure in Conceptual art, with a strong focus on communication and reception. His works displayed globally in public and institutional spaces, stand out for their generosity and fluidity. Besides sculptures, Weiner ventured into music, films, videos, artist books, and editions throughout his career.
Born in the South Bronx, New York, Weiner’s early life experiences shaped his artistry. He left sculptures on his hitchhiking routes across the US, and in 1960, his explosive piece, “Cratering Piece,” created sculptural crevices in a California state park.
Growing up amidst civil rights and anti-nuclear protests, Weiner saw art as a means of raising questions, not providing answers. His childhood environment, covered in wall notations and messages, influenced his artistic vision.
Participating in iconic exhibitions like “Live in Your Head: When Attitudes Become Form” in Bern (1969) and “Documenta 5” in Kassel (1972), Weiner solidified his place in Conceptualism. His solo exhibitions at renowned institutions globally followed, including the Whitney Museum of American Art (2007).
Weiner’s impactful public projects were exhibited worldwide, such as “SMASHED TO PIECES (IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT)” on a Vienna tower and “ALL THE STARS IN THE SKY HAVE THE SAME FACE” on the façade of the Jewish Museum, New York.
His work is present in major collections like MoMA, Guggenheim Bilbao, Centre Pompidou, and more, symbolizing his enduring influence on Conceptual art.

The exhibition will showcase works conceived by the artist over the last several decades, in addition to significant, site-specific works, created especially for the Palace. Integrated throughout the ornately furnished Palace rooms, as well as the monumental exterior of the 18th century building, the exhibition is a continuation of the artist’s practice, using language as a medium to create a multitude of sculptural forms for this UNESCO World Heritage site.
