George Condo (b. 1957, Concord, New Hampshire, USA) is known for his psychologically charged paintings that fracture and reassemble the human face. Drawing on Old Master portraiture, Cubism and cartoon logic, Condo coined the term “Artificial Realism” to describe his hybrid figures—grotesque yet elegant, comic yet unsettling.
His portraits distort anatomy with surgical precision: eyes slide, mouths split, features multiply or collapse into one another. Despite their exaggeration, these faces feel deeply human, capturing anxiety, vanity, melancholy and absurdity in equal measure. Condo’s brushwork is controlled yet elastic, allowing tradition and caricature to coexist within the same image.
Balancing humour with unease, Condo treats identity as unstable and performative. His work exposes the masks we wear—social, psychological, historical—while maintaining a painterly intelligence rooted in art history. The result is a body of work that feels both irreverent and rigorous, confronting the viewer with portraits that are as fractured as they are familiar.
