The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Neue Galerie New York have announced plans for a historic merger in 2028
Gustav Klimt (1862–1918, Vienna, Austria) was an Austrian Symbolist painter and a leading figure of the Vienna Secession movement. Gustav Klimt is best known for decorative paintings that combine symbolism, portraiture and elaborate ornamentation, often incorporating gold leaf, pattern and sensual imagery. His work played a major role in the development of modern European art at the turn of the 20th century.
Klimt’s paintings frequently explored themes of love, sexuality, mythology and the human body. Works such as The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I are recognised for their richly detailed surfaces and fusion of figuration with abstraction. Gustav Klimt combined influences from Byzantine mosaics, Art Nouveau and Symbolism to create a highly distinctive visual style.
Gustav Klimt exhibited widely in Vienna during his lifetime and remains one of the most influential artists of early modernism. His work continues to shape contemporary discussions around symbolism, decorative art and the representation of desire and identity in painting.
