This work was inspired by The Wild Escape.
Begum says, ‘I took inspiration from the colours and symmetry
in the butterflies at the Natural History Museum. The
symmetrical pattern becomes playful on the gridded paper.
Watercolours allow me to explore mark
–
making and the
inherent tonal variety of the medium, allowing each unique
mark to undercut the work’s formal regularity.’
