Paris Internationale arrives in Milan this week, marking the first edition of the independent fair outside France
Explore the captivating journey of Robert Mapplethorpe, an iconic figure in late 20th-century photography. Known for his striking juxtapositions and masterful compositions, Mapplethorpe’s work navigates the realms of sacred and profane, mainstream and underground, light and dark.
Hailing from Queens, New York, Mapplethorpe’s artistic odyssey began at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn before he embarked on his groundbreaking career. Collaborating intimately with Patti Smith, his muse and partner, Mapplethorpe’s early Polaroid portraits captured the essence of his artistic circle.
Guided by influential mentors like John McKendry and Samuel Wagstaff, Jr., Mapplethorpe delved into diverse artistic realms, from intimate self-portraits to the provocative world of New York’s S and M clubs.
In the 1980s, Mapplethorpe’s aesthetic evolved, culminating in exquisite figure studies, floral still lifes, and glamorous celebrity portraits. His mastery of lighting and composition set him apart, crafting images of timeless elegance and allure.
Supported by visionaries like Harry Lunn, Robert Miller, and Robert Self, Mapplethorpe’s work pushed boundaries and sparked controversy. The X Portfolio, a focal point of cultural debate, challenged societal norms and ignited discussions on artistic freedom.
Tragically, Mapplethorpe’s life was cut short by AIDS complications in 1989. Yet, his legacy endures through the foundation he established, dedicated to preserving his work and advocating for causes close to his heart, including HIV/AIDS awareness and art education. Explore the profound legacy of Robert Mapplethorpe and immerse yourself in his captivating vision.
