Sean Scully celebrates 80th year with major solo exhibition in Dublin.

To celebrate the world renowned artist Sean Scully turning 80 this year, Kerlin Gallery has announced an exhibition of new work.
Sean Scully (b. 1945, Dublin, Ireland; lives and works in New York, USA) is one of the most significant painters to have reintroduced emotion, materiality and human scale into abstraction. Working primarily with stripes, blocks and architectural forms, Scully treats geometry not as a system, but as a carrier of feeling—structure softened by touch, repetition disrupted by imperfection.
His paintings are built through layered bands of colour, applied with visible brushwork that allows surface, weight and rhythm to remain present. Unlike the cool rationalism of Minimalism, Scully’s abstraction is resolutely physical and expressive. Colour is dense and resonant; edges bleed; forms lean and press against one another, suggesting relationships, boundaries and emotional proximity.
Scully’s work draws on sources ranging from architecture and music to the landscapes of Ireland, Mexico and the Mediterranean. Windows, walls and facades recur as motifs, turning painting into a meditation on enclosure, separation and connection. Across decades, he has insisted that abstraction can remain both rigorous and deeply human.
Measured, monumental and emotionally charged, Scully’s practice reasserts painting as a space for contemplation and lived experience. His work stands as a counterpoint to both conceptual detachment and spectacle—abstraction grounded in touch, memory and enduring presence.
