Sean Scully (b. 1945, Dublin, Ireland; lives and works in New York, USA) is one of the most significant painters to have reintroduced emotion, materiality and human scale into abstraction. Working primarily with stripes, blocks and architectural forms, Scully treats geometry not as a system, but as a carrier of feeling—structure softened by touch, repetition disrupted by imperfection.

His paintings are built through layered bands of colour, applied with visible brushwork that allows surface, weight and rhythm to remain present. Unlike the cool rationalism of Minimalism, Scully’s abstraction is resolutely physical and expressive.
