Celebrating John Constable’s 250th Birthday in Constable Country

A journey through Suffolk reveals the landscapes and legacy of John Constable 250 years after his birth.
JMW Turner (1775–1851, London, UK) transformed landscape painting into a theatre of light and atmosphere. Working across oil, watercolor and experimental techniques, he dissolved solid form into swirling colour—storms, seas, cities and skies pushed to the edge of abstraction. His canvases capture motion as much as subject, staging nature as something vast, volatile and sublime. Restless and visionary, Turner reimagined how light could behave on a surface, leaving behind a body of work that feels uncannily modern in its intensity and scale.
