Yes, it is a fair. But it is also a mood — and a welcome aberration for this genre to have considered empty space and integrated rest areas as curatorial tools.
Man Ray, emerging from the Dada movement, began his artistic journey in the wake of World War I and the advent of modern media. The Dadaists, disillusioned with traditional art forms, embraced chance and spontaneity. Ray’s work, “The Rope Dancer Accompanies Herself with Her Shadows,” exemplifies this approach with its random arrangements of colored paper.
In 1922, Man Ray transitioned to photography, where he pioneered rayographs—negative images created without a camera. His experimentation in this medium, showcased in “Champs délicieux,” captivated the Surrealist movement. He explored the surreal in everyday life, as seen in his work “Anatomies.” Beyond photography, Ray crafted Surrealist objects like “Gift” and “Indestructible Object.”
Man Ray was integral to MoMA’s exhibitions, where his diverse portfolio—including paintings, sculptures, and films—showcased his innovative vision. In 1941, MoMA’s collection expanded to include more of Ray’s groundbreaking work, further highlighting his lasting impact on modern art.

Bustin’s reflections on his texts attempt to combine the written words with visual equivalents to reveal the expansive meaning of the text. Each work consists of three or four painted objects arranged on the wall and floor; they are made of various materials e.g. wood, linen, paper, metal, oil paint and readymade chairs. The Mallarmé text has been hand letter-pressed onto paper or linen by New North Press.
