Review: The Good, The Bad and The Venice Biennale
13 May 2026 • Tabish Khan
A review covering the highlights of this year’s Venice Biennale.
Lubaina Himid (b. 1954, Zanzibar, Tanzania) is a British contemporary artist, curator and educator known for paintings and installations that explore race, history and representation. Lubaina Himid became a leading figure in the Black British Arts Movement during the 1980s, using art to challenge historical narratives and foreground overlooked Black histories within British and European culture.
Himid’s work combines painting, text and installation, often drawing on theatrical staging, historical archives and decorative pattern. Her projects frequently address colonialism, migration and identity, using figurative imagery and bold colour to reframe how Black figures are represented in art history. Lubaina Himid’s practice also includes curatorial work and writing, contributing significantly to contemporary debates around inclusion and cultural memory.
Lubaina Himid won the Turner Prize in 2017 and has exhibited internationally in major museums and biennials. Her work remains central to contemporary British art, shaping conversations around race, history and the politics of representation.
