Brian Clarke: Renowned British painter, architectural artist, and printmaker, Brian Clarke Hon?FRIBA FRSA CF, born on July 2, 1953, is celebrated for his expansive stained glass and mosaic projects, symbolist paintings, and collaborations with leading figures in Modern and contemporary architecture.
Raised in a working-class family in northern England, Clarke emerged in the late 1970s as a key figure in the Punk movement and a stained glass designer. By the early 1980s, he gained international acclaim in contemporary art, featuring in television documentaries and becoming a regular in café society. Recognized for his architectonic art, diverse artistic output, influential connections, and thought-provoking lectures, Clarke has been a driving force in the evolution of stained glass.
His groundbreaking work in architectural and autonomous stained glass, often monumental in scale, led to innovations such as lead-free stained glass and a revolutionary ‘enhanced Pointillism’ in glass. He also pioneered sculptural stained glass resembling collage, utilizing lead for opacity or achieving absolute transparency.
Throughout his career, Clarke has championed the integration of art and architecture, collaborating with luminaries like Zaha Hadid, Norman Foster, Arata Isozaki, Oscar Niemeyer, I. M. Pei, César Pelli, and Renzo Piano. Notably, he chaired The Architecture Foundation for seven years and served on the Design Review Committee of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment. Clarke’s artistic collaborations extend to luminaries such as David Bailey, Hugh Hudson, Malcolm McLaren, and Linda McCartney and Paul McCartney.
