MADRE, a layered exploration of Bolivian identity, folklore and matriarchal memory.
Annie Leibovitz (b. 1949, Waterbury, Connecticut, USA) is one of the most recognisable portrait photographers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Known for her cinematic staging and psychological acuity, she has shaped the visual identity of contemporary celebrity culture through images that feel at once theatrical and intimate.
Leibovitz first rose to prominence as a staff photographer at Rolling Stone, where her portraits of musicians captured both the mythology and vulnerability of fame. Her later work for Vanity Fair and Vogue expanded this approach into elaborately produced compositions—carefully lit, richly detailed and narrative-driven. Whether photographing political leaders, actors or artists, she constructs scenes that amplify character while retaining a human core.
Balancing spectacle with sensitivity, Leibovitz treats portraiture as collaboration. Her images do not simply document; they stage presence. Through scale, composition and mood, she has redefined how public figures are seen, creating portraits that operate as cultural icons while remaining grounded in the tension between performance and personhood.
