Tate Britain has unveiled When Words Fall Silent, Cinema Speaks…, a major new commission by Zineb Sedira
Zineb Sedira (b. 1963, Paris, France) is a French-Algerian contemporary artist working across film, photography and installation. Zineb Sedira’s practice explores memory, migration and postcolonial history, often focusing on the relationship between personal narratives and broader political histories connected to Algeria, France and the Mediterranean.
Sedira’s work frequently draws on archives, oral histories and cinematic language to examine displacement, identity and cultural transmission across generations. Her installations combine moving image, photography and objects to create immersive environments that reflect on labour, resistance and the legacy of colonialism. Zineb Sedira often explores the sea and maritime routes as symbols of migration, exchange and historical connection.
Zineb Sedira represented France at the 2022 Venice Biennale and has exhibited internationally in major museums and biennials. Her interdisciplinary practice positions her as a significant figure in contemporary art engaging with diaspora, memory and transnational history.
