But any family history exceeds the comfort of the domestic and sits within a bigger sphere of politics and culture, which can shape, expand, disrupt and destabilise.
Wilhelm Sasnal (b. 1972, Tarnów, Poland) is a Polish contemporary painter known for works that combine personal imagery, historical reference and contemporary culture. Wilhelm Sasnal works primarily in painting but also engages with film and photography, creating a practice that moves between abstraction and figuration. His paintings often draw on photographs, media images and everyday scenes, reinterpreted through a restrained and direct visual language.
Sasnal’s work frequently addresses themes of memory, politics and identity, particularly in relation to Polish history and broader European contexts. His compositions are often pared back, using flat colour, simplified forms and shifts in scale to create ambiguity and emotional distance. Wilhelm Sasnal’s ability to move between intimate subject matter and historical narrative positions his work within a wider discourse on contemporary painting and representation.
Wilhelm Sasnal has exhibited internationally in major museums and galleries and is considered one of the most significant painters of his generation. His work continues to influence contemporary painting through its engagement with image culture, history and visual storytelling.

Wilhelm Sasnal’s 2015 exhibition at Sadie Coles HQ brings together an extensive series of new paintings.
