Caravaggio’s masterpiece, which has never before been seen in public in the UK, on display from Wednesday
Caravaggio (1571–1610, Milan, Italy) electrified Baroque painting with a realism that felt both raw and divine. Using radical chiaroscuro, he staged biblical scenes as confrontations of flesh and shadow—figures lit by a single, urgent beam that reveals every bruise, wrinkle, and tremor. His subjects, drawn from the streets as much as scripture, collapse the sacred and the everyday into a single charged moment. Turbulent, visceral, and unmistakably human, Caravaggio’s work reshaped the drama of painting, leaving an influence that still pulses through contemporary vision.
