The V & A is the world’s largest museum of applied arts, decorative arts and design, with 145 galleries
Auguste Rodin (1840–1917, Paris, France) was a French sculptor widely regarded as a founder of modern sculpture. Auguste Rodin is known for expressive bronze and marble sculptures that emphasise movement, emotion and the physicality of the human body. His work broke from academic tradition by focusing on fragment, gesture and surface rather than idealised form.
Rodin’s sculptures often depict figures in moments of tension or reflection, with visible modelling and textured surfaces that capture light and movement. Works such as The Thinker and The Kiss exemplify his ability to combine classical themes with a modern approach to form and expression. Auguste Rodin’s practice frequently explored themes of passion, suffering and human experience.
Auguste Rodin exhibited widely during his lifetime and remains one of the most influential sculptors in art history. His work shaped the transition from traditional sculpture to modernist approaches, influencing generations of artists working with the body, material and expressive form.
