Pauline Boty was a pioneering British Pop artist whose bold, colourful paintings and collages brought together popular culture, politics, sexuality and female experience. One of the few women at the centre of the British Pop Art movement, Boty drew imagery from cinema, advertising, magazines, music and current affairs, creating works that celebrated popular culture while questioning the social and political attitudes of 1960s Britain. Her distinctive approach combined exuberant colour and recognisable cultural icons with a sharp awareness of gender, power and desire.

Born in Croydon in 1938, Boty studied stained glass at the Royal College of Art after initially being discouraged from entering its painting school. She became part of London’s emerging Pop scene alongside artists including Peter Blake and Derek Boshier, developing paintings and collages populated by celebrities, political figures and fragments of mass-media imagery. Marilyn Monroe, Jean-Paul Belmondo and The Beatles appeared alongside references to contemporary politics and sexuality, allowing Boty to explore the relationship between private desire and the increasingly image-driven culture around her.

Alongside her visual art, Boty worked as an actor, dancer and broadcaster, becoming a visible presence within London’s 1960s cultural scene. Her career was cut tragically short when she died in 1966 at the age of 28, and for decades her contribution to Pop Art was largely overlooked. The subsequent rediscovery of her work has radically reassessed her position within post-war British art. Today, Pauline Boty is recognised as a significant figure in British Pop Art whose vibrant, politically alert paintings offered a distinctly female perspective on celebrity, sexuality and popular culture.
