Accessories are a great way to make a statement or dress up your outfit. You can have a variety of accessories to play around with, however, if you don’t have the skills to style your outfit with your accessories, they are completely useless. If you want to utilise accessories in your own personal style, then you should learn how to use them properly. Once you have mastered the skill of accessorising, you can level up your personal style, express yourself through your outfits, and make a bold statement.

If you’re not sure how to get started, here are some top tips.

#1 Understand the types of accessories

There are a variety of different accessories that you can utilise when styling your outfit. The most important accessory is footwear, as this is an essential item to wear when you go out and is not optional. You should therefore choose a few stylish options to suit different outfits. For example, choose a few neutral options, and then something that will elevate your look, such as Alexander McQueen trainers. Make sure that any shoes you add to your wardrobe are comfortable, as well as stylish. This will ensure that you can wear them, and spend time in them. The last thing you want is footwear that you love, but can’t show off.

There are other accessories that you should include:

  • Jewellery – These can be as subtle or as bold as you prefer. Think about necklaces, earrings and watches.
  • Bags – These are often a necessary item if you need to carry around money and other items. You can opt for tote bags, shoulder bags or briefcases.
  • Belts – These are also functional, but a great way to make a plain outfit more interesting.
  • Winter accessories – These are additional items that you may wear to keep warm in winters, such as a scarf, hat, and gloves. These should be neutral to ensure they can go well with any outfit.

Whichever accessories you choose to invest in, you should build a variety of options that can be worn on different occasions.

#2 Understand what accessories can do for an outfit

Accessories come in a variety of styles, colours and patterns. If you opt for accessories that are bright, colourful, vibrant and full of animal patterns, they are going to be harder to pair with an outfit. Instead, these types of accessories will create the outfit. You should always pair these kinds of accessories with a neutral wardrobe. As you become more experienced with styling clothes, you may find a suitable way to layer them.

Neutral accessories are great staple items to have in your wardrobe. These are items that are not so bold and are small and elegant. They can easily be partnered with any outfit. You can use them on neutral outfits to keep them modern and professional, or you can use them on bolder outfits to dress them up for a night out.

#3 Understand how to personalise your style

When you learn the basics and experiment with different accessories, you will start to understand which accessories work for you, and which ones don’t. As you gain more experience, you can start to experiment and get creative with your own style and create new looks that you enjoy.

Accessorising is powerful. Make sure you understand what accessories you can use, and how to use them, to help you get started.
