Show runs: 26th July – 15th September 2012
BREESE LITTLE are to present a solo exhibition of four large new canvases by Tom de Freston. These works continue his exploration of core themes surrounding his investigation of tragedy. The latest paintings retain a keen interest in literary sources such as William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1590 – 1596), King Lear (1603 – 1606) and Macbeth (1603 – 1607). Another seminal influence on de Freston’s recent practice has been Gustav Meyrink’s The Golem (1914). Characterised by the period’s interest in amnesia, hallucination and doppelgangers these tropes give de Freston’s paintings the visceral power of psychological episodes.
