Richard Prince Four Saturdays at Gagosian Madison Avenue
Richard Prince, born in 1949, is a renowned American painter and photographer who has left an indelible mark on the art world. Over the course of his career, Prince has ventured into various artistic expressions, showcasing his versatility and innovation.
In the mid-1970s, Prince experimented with drawings and painterly collages, though he has since distanced himself from these early works. However, it was his groundbreaking piece, “Untitled (Cowboy),” that catapulted him into the art elite. This iconic image, a rephotograph of a photograph by Sam Abell originally used in a cigarette advertisement, made history by fetching over $1 million at auction in 2005 at Christie’s New York. This achievement solidified his status as a trailblazing artist of his generation, a sentiment echoed by The New York Times.
Starting in 1977, Prince embarked on a project that involved rephotographing images from The New York Times. This endeavor continued until 1983, with notable works like “Spiritual America,” which provocatively referenced Garry Gross’s photograph of Brooke Shields at the age of ten. His “Jokes” series, initiated in 1986, delved into the sexual fantasies and frustrations of middle-class America, utilizing stand-up comedy and burlesque humor to convey profound social commentary.
After residing in New York City for a quarter-century, Prince relocated to upstate New York. There, he established the “Second House,” a mini-museum acquired by the Guggenheim Museum. Tragically, this artistic haven was struck by lightning and consumed by fire shortly after its purchase, marking a poignant moment in Prince’s life.
In June 2021, Prince’s painting “Runaway Nurse” created between 2005 and 2006 achieved an astounding record-breaking sale of 93,986,000 HKD (approximately US$12,121,000) at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong, further cementing his influence in the art world. Presently, Richard Prince calls New York City his home and continues to produce groundbreaking art that captivates audiences worldwide. Explore the captivating journey of this visionary artist whose work continues to push the boundaries of creativity and imagination.
