Jenkin van Zyl creates immersive installations, films and sculptures that draw on fantasy, horror, science fiction and queer culture to construct richly imagined worlds. Combining elaborate costumes, animatronic creatures, prosthetics and cinematic environments, van Zyl explores transformation, desire and identity through works that blur the boundaries between reality and fiction. His practice embraces excess and theatricality, using spectacle as a way to examine the emotional and psychological complexities of contemporary life.
Working across moving image, sculpture and installation, van Zyl frequently builds environments populated by hybrid beings and fictional narratives that challenge conventional ideas of beauty, power and belonging. His work is informed by mythology, popular culture, club culture and the aesthetics of cult cinema, creating immersive experiences where vulnerability and monstrosity coexist. Through these meticulously crafted worlds, he invites viewers to confront themes of alienation, fantasy, resilience and the transformative potential of imagination.
By merging handcrafted techniques with cinematic storytelling, van Zyl has established a distinctive practice that expands the possibilities of installation art, creating emotionally charged environments that are as visually spectacular as they are conceptually layered.
