The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Neue Galerie New York have announced plans for a historic merger in 2028
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938, Aschaffenburg, Germany) was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker best known as a founding member of the artist group Die Brücke. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner played a central role in the development of German Expressionism through paintings and prints that captured the energy, anxiety and transformation of modern urban life.
Kirchner’s work is characterised by bold colour, angular forms and expressive line. His paintings frequently depicted city streets, dancers, landscapes and figures in moments of psychological tension. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner combined influences from African art, folk traditions and modern city culture to create a highly distinctive visual language that rejected academic realism in favour of emotional intensity.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner exhibited widely in Germany and across Europe before his work was condemned by the Nazi regime as “degenerate art.” He remains one of the most important artists of early modernism, with a lasting influence on Expressionism, printmaking and modern figurative painting.

Despite my work being of an outwardly abstract appearance, nonetheless, I feel that it reflects a physical connection to natural phenomena and people, and is therefore deeply rooted to our existence on the planet.
