Diving into Edmund de Waal’s Roots: Born in Nottingham, England, on September 10, 1964, he hails from a distinguished lineage. His mother, Esther Aline (née Lowndes-Moir), was a renowned historian specializing in Celtic mythology, while his father, Victor de Waal, began as the chaplain of the University of Nottingham and later ascended to the position of Dean of Canterbury Cathedral.
Edmund’s family history unfolds with intriguing connections. His grandfather, Hendrik de Waal, a Dutch businessman, made the pivotal decision to relocate to England. On his paternal side, his grandmother Elisabeth and great-grandfather Viktor von Ephrussi were integral members of the Ephrussi family, a captivating narrative detailed in Edmund’s acclaimed work, ‘The Hare with Amber Eyes.’ Elisabeth de Waal, in her own right, contributed to literature with the publication of her novel, ‘The Exiles Return,’ released by Persephone Books in 2013.
Edmund de Waal’s siblings further contribute to the family’s diverse achievements. His brother, John de Waal, is a distinguished barrister married to the renowned author Kit de Waal.
