Sculpture in the Garden: The Storytellers transforms Worcester College’s historic grounds into a five-act sculpture exhibition
Dorothy Cross (b. 1956, Cork, Ireland) is an Irish contemporary artist working across sculpture, photography, installation and film. Dorothy Cross is known for works that explore the body, identity, nature and transformation through unexpected combinations of materials and imagery. Her practice often brings together human and animal forms, creating works that shift between the familiar and the uncanny.
Cross frequently uses found objects and organic materials, including cowhides, snakeskins and marine references, to investigate themes of desire, spirituality and mortality. Her works often occupy a space between sculpture and symbolism, drawing on mythology and the natural world to create emotionally charged encounters. Dorothy Cross’s practice examines the tensions between attraction and discomfort, intimacy and distance.
Dorothy Cross has exhibited internationally in major museums, galleries and biennials and represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale in 1993. Her interdisciplinary work has established her as one of Ireland’s most significant contemporary artists, influencing discussions around materiality, symbolism and contemporary sculpture.
