Cory Arcangel, born in 1978 in Buffalo, NY, is an artist, composer, curator, and entrepreneur based in Stavanger, Norway. Known for exploring the nuances of both old and new digital technologies, he sheds light on their obsolescence, humor, aesthetics, and eerie impact on contemporary life. Employing a semi-archeological approach, Arcangel delves into video games, software, social media, and machine learning, treating them as both subject matter and medium.

Noteworthy works include “Totally Fucked” (2003), a hacked Mario Bros game where Mario is perpetually stuck on a cube; “Permanent Vacation” (2008), featuring two computers caught in an out-of-office email loop; “Drei Klavierstücke op.11” (2009), remixing YouTube clips of cats playing pianos to replicate Arnold Schoenberg’s 1909 score; and “Working on my Novel” (2009), a compilation of Twitter search results for “working on my novel.” Recent projects include “Flatware” (2018-), abstract “paintings” on Ikea tabletops made from diverse leisurewear, and “/ro??de?o?/ Let’s Play: HOLLYWOOD” (2017-2021), a machine learning computer playing the Android game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood.

Cory Arcangel made history as the youngest artist since Bruce Nauman to have a full-floor solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2011). His global exhibitions include “Midnight Moment – Another Romp Through the IP (Times Square edit)” in Times Square (2022), “Topline” at CC Foundation, Shanghai (2019), and “Be the first of your friends” at Espace Louis Vuitton München, Munich, Germany (2015). He received the Kino der Kunst Award in 2015, was shortlisted for the Nam June Paik Award in 2014, and launched Arcangel Surfware, a merchandise and publishing imprint, in 2014. The flagship store opened in Stavanger, Norway, in 2018.
