Today Sunday 31st May Artist Carmen Herrera celebrate’s her 100th Birthday: an epic milestone amidst an extraordinary year.
Currently on view in ‘America is Hard to See’, the inaugural exhibition at the new Whitney Museum of American Art is Blanco y Verde (1959), the first of Herrera’s paintings acquired for the institution’s permanent collection. The Whitney will further spotlight Carmen’s work with a solo exhibition in 2016, curated by Dana Miller.

In continuing the celebration of her centennial, Lisson Gallery are presenting a solo presentation of Herrera’s work at Frieze Masters 2015, October 14th – 18th, 2015 in London.
And film director Alison Klayman, best known for her award winning documentary Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, has been working on a documentary about Herrera. Titled The 100 Year Show, Alison’s film premiered at Hotdocs, the Canadian international documentary film festival in April and screened at Docaviv International Documentary Film Festival in Tel Aviv. www.the100yearsshow.com
About Carmen Herrera
Carmen Herrera was born in Havana, Cuba in 1915. She moved frequently between France and Cuba throughout the 1930s and 1940s; having started studying architecture at the Universidad de La Habana, Havana (1937–38), she trained at the Art Students League, New York (1943–45), before exhibiting four times at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1949–53). She settled in New York in 1954, where she continues to live and work. Herrera’s paintings were the subject of a large-scale survey at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, UK in 2009; she has also had solo exhibitions at Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern, (2010) and Museo del Barrio, New York (1998). She has been included in the group shows ‘Negotiations’, Today Art Museum, Beijing, China (2010) and ‘The Geometric Unconscious: A Century of Abstraction’, Sheldon Museum of Art, Nebraska (2012). She was awarded a fellowship from the Cintas Foundation, New York (1966–68) and a grant by the Creative Artists Public Service, New York (1977). Her work is in numerous public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Tate Collection, London; the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington DC; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.
