Gagosian to debut a new work by Rudolf Stingel in Paris. This monumental painting of the New York City skyline is the subject of a single-work display at the rue de Castiglione gallery from October 22nd, 2026, to January 9th, 2027.
Like the paintings of Giorgio Morandi and Canaletto, Stingel’s new work celebrates the power of the familiar and the banal. From the self-portraits, he shifts the camera to the cityscape. And the city looks back.

About the artist
Rudolf Stingel (b. 1956, Merano, Italy) is an Italian-born, New York-based artist who has spent more than four decades reimagining what painting can be. Moving between abstraction, photorealism and immersive installation, Stingel works with an unexpected range of materials, from shimmering silver surfaces and richly patterned carpets to aluminium, rubber and reflective insulation. His work plays with texture, repetition and scale, blurring the boundaries between painting, sculpture and the spaces we inhabit.
Since emerging in the late 1980s with his distinctive silver paintings, Stingel has developed a practice that is as much about the experience of art as the object itself. His spectacular 2013 exhibition at Palazzo Grassi in Venice transformed the historic building with intricately patterned carpet covering its walls and floors, while other installations have invited visitors to scratch, draw and leave their own marks on reflective surfaces. Playful yet carefully considered, Stingel’s work challenges ideas of authorship, originality and permanence, turning familiar materials into something altogether more unexpected.
