Known for her rich physical experience and mastery in Latin dance styles, Guo Lin has built an impressive career marked by consistent high-ranking achievements in numerous national and international competitions. Watching her dance is like witnessing pure artistry in motion—every step, every turn is executed with precision and elegance. Her dedication to perfecting her craft is evident in her performances, where her technique and ability to convey emotion through movement truly set her apart.
Interviewer: Thank you for joining us today! To start, can you tell us a bit about how you first got involved in dance?
Lin: Thank you for having me! I was introduced to dance at a very young age. My parents enrolled me in Latin dance and ballet classes, and I also learned to play the piano. I enjoyed the discipline and artistry that came with each of these, especially dance. Over the years, I had the chance to compete in both national and international dance competitions, and those experiences shaped me as a dancer and performer.
It sounds like you had a very accomplished start! What was it like to compete on both national and international stages?
Lin: Competing was both thrilling and challenging. On one hand, it’s incredibly exciting to represent your passion and skill on a big stage and to see how other dancers interpret the same styles. On the other hand, there’s a lot of pressure, and it takes intense preparation to stand out. I learned a lot from each competition, from working with my partners to refining my technique and understanding how to communicate with the audience through movement.
After such a strong foundation, what inspired you to study dance performance at the graduate level, and why the UK?
Lin: I wanted to deepen my understanding of dance beyond just technique and performance. Studying dance performance at a graduate level in the UK gave me access to a vibrant, creative environment where I could explore new aspects of dance theory, choreography, and performance styles. The UK has a rich dance culture, and being exposed to such diverse forms of dance helped me see my own training in a new light.
Interviewer: I understand you also found a new dance partner Oskar in the UK. How has this partnership influenced your dancing?
Lin: Finding a new partner in the UK was a game-changer for me. My partner and I share a similar vision and dedication, and we’ve been able to push each other to new levels. We’ve continued to participate in international competitions, which has been both challenging and rewarding. Dancing with someone who brings out the best in you is an incredible experience, and our partnership has really allowed me to grow as both a dancer and competitor.
What advice would you give to young dancers aspiring to reach similar heights?
Lin: I would say, stay passionate and stay open to learning. Each style of dance has something unique to offer, and it’s important to explore and understand different approaches. Also, don’t underestimate the importance of working with a great partner—it’s a relationship that can really shape your dance journey. Finally, enjoy the process. The journey can be challenging, but each experience, whether a competition or a performance, is a step towards becoming the dancer you aspire to be.
Thank you for sharing your journey with us! We’re excited to see what you accomplish next.
Lin: Thank you! It’s been a pleasure.
