Tracey Emin, Peter Doig, Antony Gormley, Jeremy Deller, Rose Wylie, and Ali Smith are among leading artists donating works for a charity auction in aid of The Arts Foundation in the UK
All donated artworks will be auctioned in support of independent artists and creatives in the UK as part of the Arts Foundation’s prestigious Fellowship programme, the Arts Foundation Futures Awards.
Online bidding is open at auction.artsfoundation.co.uk running through to 5 pm GMT on 21st September, with proxy bidding available on the night of the auction: Monday 25th September 2023.
The live auction will be hosted by Michael Macaulay, SVP and Deputy Chairman, Contemporary Art and leading auctioneer at Sotheby’s, and culminate in a celebratory dinner on Monday 25th September at Toklas Restaurant, with a special performance by Akeim Toussaint Buck (Arts Foundation Dance Theatre Fellow, 2023).
Participants can bid on a range of unique auction items and one-of-a-kind experiences from Ali Smith’s personal, first edition reading copy of Hotel World published in 2001; exclusive press night tickets to the House of Bernarda Alba at The National Theatre, including after-party access; to a full set of Peter Doig’s enthralling Zermatt series, 2022; and the iconic neon, More Solitude, 2014 by the eminent artist, Tracey Emin.
Since it was founded in 1993 the Arts Foundation has awarded over £1.8 million to the most promising artists in the UK at a pivotal moment in their careers to enable them to concentrate on their creative development, experiment, and realise their artistic potential.
The foundation’s annual Arts Foundation Futures Awards provide vital unconditional grant funding, awarding five transformative £10,000 Fellowships across artistic disciplines, with all Shortlisted Artists receiving £1,000 towards the development of their practice.?
We are still navigating a difficult period for our cultural sector with the cost of living crisis and inflation rates. Such challenges are always most keenly felt by our independent artists and freelancers. This is why it’s critical that we still invest in the UK’s extraordinary artistic talent, and their future legacies, today. We are immensely grateful to the artists and organisations who have kindly donated auction items. The Arts Foundation is excited to build on their generosity to engender a culture of support among the wider public for independent artists and their livelihoods.

This year also marks 30 years of the Arts Foundation’s support for independent artists in the UK whose alumni include eminent artistic practitioners, such as Wayne McGregor, the late Sarah Kane, Asif Kapadia, Ali Smith, Carol Morley, Rufus Norris and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.

The need for our grant funding has never been greater, and we’re keen to work towards increasing the number and level of the awards we can give each year. What I find distinctive about the foundation is that it brings together and celebrates all contemporary arts from Design, Film, Literature, and Music to the Performing Arts and Visual Arts, so we look forward to the auction being the start of building a broad community of supporters around the charity to expand our work.
