Kathleen Ryan: Red Rose @ Josh Lilley
Decaying oversized fruits become something much more when you get closer and realise they are decorated with beads and gems in a visually spectacular exhibition. Car bonnets are joined by ‘spiderwebs’ but this meeting of the natural and manufactured world is all constructed to create what feels like an oversized wonderland that we’ve strayed into. Until 13 August.
Modern Baroque @ James Freeman Gallery
Two contemporary artists provide updated take on art history as Rebecca Stevenson’s wax and bronze sculptures pay homage to vanitas works featuring animals and fruit. While Daniel Hosego’s humorous drawings and screen prints place the likes of Bezos and Trump into the classical woodland theme, a fitting pairing of artists. Until 9 July.
Billy Apple®: Rainbows 1965 @ Mayor Gallery
Rainbows abound in Mayor Gallery’s first posthumous exhibition of Billy Apple’s® work, as neon rainbows arc, circle and light up the space in a fitting celebration of the recently deceased artist – by re-staging his 1965 exhibition. He was one of the first to use electric lights as a sculptural medium and it’s still mesmerising over 50 years later. Until 27 July.
Sacha Ingber: One Direction @ Vitrine
Inaugurating its news Fitzrovia gallery space are the sculptural works of Sacha Ingber. The concept of the ring binder, the kind we use to store our documents in, are turned into playful landscapes that incorporate the artist’s own tax return, taps, water and tiles in these fascinating creations. Until 3 July.
Small is Beautiful: Miniature Art exhibition @ 81 Brompton Road
There are many stunning creations made at a very small scale in this exhibition including a political piece by Slinkachu where bankers and ordinary citizens play tug of war with a 5 Euro note, and works so small they need to be seen with a magnifying glass. It’s a treat to gawp at the level of skill needed to create these pieces. Until 17 July, ticketed.
