Ally McIntyre is an emerging Canadian painter who challenges the idea that there can be a ‘perfect’ in painting, in her exhibition ‘The Sun Popped’ McIntyre blends traditional genres, iconographies and painterly processes together to create an alternative mythology in a new painterly age.
McIntyre looks to nature, animals and the relationship between the Moon and the Sun as objects of power and worship. Recognising the moon as a traditional symbol of femininity, her show explores romantic notions of the end of the sun whilst alluding to her personal opinions on contemporary feminist activism.
Using a mix of acrylic, glitter and spray paint on a collection of ten paintings, which range from small to large-scale canvases, McIntyre displays her ability to work playfully with a range of materials whilst skilfully crafting striking, confident and inquisitive pieces of work.
‘Experiencing Ally’s paintings you understand what a confident painter she is. Her work is empowering. Her visual language has the conviction of a well accomplished artist. Her use of colour and composition are unusual, unique and bold.’ Rebecca Lidert director CNB gallery
