Churchill Gardens Estate Lupus Street, Pimlico, SW1V London Mid day – 10.30 PM

On Bank Holiday Monday 5 May 2014 Pimlico’s largest housing estate will be transformed into an independent art state within the community. The one-day art event is inspired by the 1949 Ealing comedy Passport to Pimlico, in which residents of Pimlico declare themselves independent from the rest of Great Britain, its laws and governance, freeing themselves from post-war austerity measures. Their music-making and merriment does not last forever, but before they return to British citizenship they triumphantly secure a plot of land for the community, away from the hands of developers.

Challenging the usual rules that govern interaction with artwork in the exhibition space, residents and visitors are encouraged to become participants. In the process of exploring ideas around independence, territory and community, the event will cut across the multiple associations of May Day, from the celebration and documentation of protest, through to original interpretations of traditional (spring/Pagan) festivities such as dancing, games, music and dressing up. The film Passport to Pimlico will be screened throughout the day.
