Victor Vasarely (1906–1997) was a pioneering figure of Op Art, known for transforming geometric abstraction into dynamic visual experiences built around colour, movement and optical illusion. Working across painting, sculpture, print and architecture, Vasarely developed a distinctive visual language in which repeated forms and carefully calibrated contrasts appear to shift, pulse and expand beyond the surface.

Born in Hungary and later based in France, Vasarely drew on his early studies at the Bauhaus-inspired Mühely academy in Budapest, combining art with ideas drawn from mathematics, science and perception. His paintings use grids, circles, squares and geometric forms to destabilise the viewer’s sense of space, creating images that seem to bulge, recede or move despite remaining entirely static.

Central to Vasarely’s practice was the belief that art should move beyond the unique object and become part of everyday life. Through his concept of the “Plastic Alphabet”, he developed a modular system of colours and forms that could be reproduced and adapted across different scales and environments, from paintings and prints to architecture and public space. This democratic approach helped expand abstraction beyond the gallery and into the wider visual culture of the twentieth century.

Widely regarded as the father of Op Art, Vasarely had a profound influence on contemporary art, design and popular culture. His experiments with perception continue to resonate across digital art and visual culture, revealing how simple geometric systems can generate endlessly complex and immersive experiences.
