The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Neue Galerie New York have announced plans for a historic merger in 2028
Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980, Pöchlarn, Austria) was an Austrian Expressionist painter, writer and playwright known for emotionally intense portraits and dramatic figurative works. Oskar Kokoschka played a major role in the development of Expressionism in early 20th-century Europe, using energetic brushwork and psychological depth to portray the human figure.
Kokoschka’s paintings often focused on portraiture, landscape and the emotional tensions of modern life. His works are characterised by distorted forms, expressive colour and restless movement, reflecting inner psychological states rather than realistic representation. Oskar Kokoschka was associated with the cultural and artistic circles of Vienna and later worked across Europe during periods of political upheaval and exile.
Oskar Kokoschka exhibited internationally throughout his career and remains an important figure in modern art history. His work influenced later developments in figurative painting and Expressionism through its focus on emotion, individuality and psychological intensity.
