Dana Schutz is one of the leading painters of her generation, celebrated for her bold, expressive compositions that combine vivid colour, distorted figuration and psychological intensity. Working primarily in painting, Schutz creates imagined narratives populated by fragmented bodies, exaggerated gestures and surreal scenarios that explore the complexities of contemporary life. Her work balances humour with unease, using the language of painting to examine themes of identity, vulnerability, conflict and the human condition.

Born in Michigan in 1976, Schutz studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art before completing an MFA at Columbia University in New York. She emerged in the early 2000s with paintings that fused elements of abstraction, caricature and art history, quickly establishing a distinctive visual language that drew on influences ranging from German Expressionism and Philip Guston to comic strips and popular culture. Rather than depicting specific events, Schutz constructs fictional worlds that allow her to explore universal emotional and social experiences through invented characters and situations.

Her large-scale canvases are characterised by energetic brushwork, densely layered surfaces and dynamic compositions in which figures appear to twist, stretch and dissolve. Guggenheim Museum; Tate; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among many others.
