Anicka Yi (b. 1971, Seoul, South Korea) is a Korean American contemporary artist known for installations that combine biology, technology and sensory experience. Working across sculpture, installation, scent and video, Anicka Yi explores how humans relate to microorganisms, artificial intelligence and ecological systems. Her work frequently incorporates unusual materials such as bacteria cultures, organic matter and custom-designed scents.

Yi’s practice investigates the boundaries between the biological and the technological, often collaborating with scientists and engineers. By introducing smell and living organisms into gallery spaces, she expands the role of perception beyond vision and challenges traditional ideas about what art can be made from. Many of her installations examine invisible systems—microbial life, data networks and environmental processes—that shape everyday existence.

Anicka Yi has exhibited internationally in major museums and biennials and received the Hugo Boss Prize in 2016. Her interdisciplinary practice places her among the leading artists exploring biotechnology, sensory art and post-human perspectives in contemporary art.
