David Zwirner has announced the representation of the work of Yoshitomo Nara.
Yoshitomo Nara (born 1959, Hirosaki, Japan) is one of Japan’s most influential contemporary artists, known for his disarming portraits of solitude and rebellion. Educated at Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts and later at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under A.R. Penck, Nara developed a language that fuses pop immediacy with psychological depth — a quiet defiance rendered through wide-eyed figures and charged stillness.
Since the late 1980s, Nara has exhibited internationally, with major retrospectives at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2021), Yuz Museum, Shanghai (2022), and the Hayward Gallery, London (2024–25). Other key presentations include I DON’T MIND, IF YOU FORGET ME. (Yokohama Museum of Art, 2001), Nothing Ever Happens (Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, 2003–05), and The Beginning Place (Aomori Museum of Art, 2023).
In 2018, he opened N’s Yard in Nasushiobara, Japan — a hybrid studio, exhibition space, and garden that reflects his ongoing exploration of introspection and place. Nara’s work is held in major public collections worldwide, including MoMA, New York; LACMA, Los Angeles; the British Museum, London; and the Aomori Museum of Art, Japan.
