Shannon PLUMB IN Madison Square Park New York Starting March 19,

Madison Square Park visitors just might catch a glimpse of themselves in any one of twelve short films by Shannon Plumb. Her series, The Park, a combination of spectator sport people watching and slapstick humor, kicks off Mad. Sq. Art’s exciting 2009 season.
“The park is perfect for observation,” says Plumb, when explaining her choice of the everyday backdrops that would become the foundation of her project. “You can sit next to the old men,” she says, ”with their hands on their canes, and next to the girl sketching clouds over the buildings and watch the way the world works.”
For a year, Plumb set up her Super 8 camera in different locations throughout the park, waiting to capture inspiration for the many characters she would later incorporate by acting in front of a green screen. Sometimes it came in the form of flocks of pigeons flying in and out of frame, sometimes in the quirkiness of unsuspecting sunbathers.
Out of all the characters inspired by her time in Madison Square Park, which one is Plumb’s favorite? “The Tourist,” she says, “exhibiting all the excitement and vitality this city offers.”
