New York gallery LUmkA is relocating to London, opening its new space with Privacy Index, a group exhibition exploring the shifting nature of surveillance and visibility in contemporary life. The show runs 19th March – 11th April 2026, with an opening reception on 19th March (6PM–9PM) featuring a performance by LINX.
Bringing together works by Ruby Chen, Nicholas Cheveldave, James Hoff, Miles Scharff, Linx Peng and Ivo Nagel, Privacy Index examines how surveillance has moved far beyond the traditional camera lens. Today, the human body itself has become a source of constant data extraction. From facial recognition and gait analysis to biometric tracking and algorithmic profiling, machine vision systems increasingly translate gestures, expressions and movements into datasets.
Across the exhibition, the artists explore how these technologies reshape identity, agency and self-perception. Drawing loosely on Michel Foucault’s concept of the Panopticon, the exhibition considers how awareness of constant observation subtly alters behaviour, encouraging individuals to internalise systems of control.
At a moment when privacy is widely discussed yet increasingly difficult to define, Privacy Index reflects on how surveillance capitalism has embedded itself into everyday life. Through installation, digital media and performance, the artists probe the tension between visibility and autonomy, asking how individuals might resist or reinterpret systems designed to monitor them.
Opening LUmkA’s new London programme, the exhibition positions the gallery within a broader conversation about technology, data and the politics of observation — themes that continue to shape contemporary art and culture.
