Grey Cube Projects has announced an open call for its Living Systems Residency in Bogotá, inviting artists and curators to apply for a research-led programme set within one of Latin America’s most culturally active cities.
As Colombia’s largest city and a major academic and commercial centre, Bogotá has long drawn artists and creative practitioners. Since the launch of ARTBO at Corferias in 2004, the city has consolidated its position within the regional art ecosystem, hosting international events including the Bogotá Biennales 2025 and supporting a dense network of galleries and independent art spaces. The residency’s studios and accommodation sit within walking distance of the northern art district — an area known for its contemporary spaces, cafés and bookshops — offering residents immediate access to the city’s cultural landscape.
The Living Systems Residency positions artistic practice as a form of research. Drawing on theoretical frameworks such as new materialism, posthumanism and agentic realism, the programme encourages participants to rethink relationships between materials, technologies and more-than-human systems. Structured academic seminars take place twice a week, accompanied by one-to-one curatorial coaching sessions tailored to each resident’s project. Weekly visits to museums, galleries and artists’ studios are complemented by informal lunches and evening gatherings with curators, academics and established artists, fostering direct engagement with Bogotá’s art community.
Residents are provided with a designated workspace within a shared studio environment, while living in private, self-contained studio apartments equipped with kitchen, bathroom and high-speed Wi-Fi. The residency culminates in a public presentation — either an open studio or group exhibition — offering participants the opportunity to share work developed during their stay.
The 2026 residency sessions run in monthly blocks from April through September. The programme is self-financed at USD 2,200 per month, which includes studio space, private accommodation, weekly art visits, academic seminars, individual coaching, a final public presentation and a welcome networking event. While scholarships are not available, Grey Cube Projects can provide letters of admission to support external funding applications.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Artists and curators with undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications, or equivalent professional experience, are invited to apply. Candidates should demonstrate sustained commitment to their practice and an interest in research-driven approaches. Applicants are required to submit a CV, portfolio, short motivation statement and up to three examples of recent work. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview.
Applications can be submitted via the Grey Cube Projects website. With limited places available per cohort, early application is encouraged.
Set within a city shaped by layered histories and rapid cultural growth, the Living Systems Residency offers artists time, context and critical exchange — positioning Bogotá not simply as backdrop, but as an active collaborator in the development of new work.
