Sadie Coles HQ will open a new gallery at 17 Savile Row this autumn. Occupying a historic six-storey townhouse in the centre of Mayfair, the new 6,000 sq ft space will provide three galleries, a bookshop and private floors.

17 Savile Row was built in the 18th century as part of the Burlington Estate, an area with a long association with contemporary art. From 1870-1952, the building was home to the Burlington Fine Arts Club, a prominent members’ club which played a central role in the London art scene of the late 19th and early 20th century, acting as a meeting place and exhibition space for artists and collectors. In 1872, the space held the first complete exhibition of J.M.W. Turner’s Liber Studiorum, a collection of 71 engravings based on the artist’s landscape studies.

The Grade II listed building has been carefully revealed and restored to retain its original 18th century features and will offer artists a unique environment in which to exhibit work. Led by Dara Khera/Work Ltd (using BOHM, their proprietary Building Information Modelling technology) this special building will house a bookshop designed by Jean-Phillipe Sanfourche.

17 Savile Row will replace the current premises on Davies Street after ten years of exhibitions. The new gallery will be the tenth space occupied by Sadie Coles HQ in its energetic twenty-eight-year migration across the West End of London. Alongside 17 Savile Row, Sadie Coles HQ will continue programming at the Kingly Street and Bury Street galleries.

The opening date and details of the inaugural programme will be announced later this year.

“Savile Row is one of the most iconic streets in the capital, in an area filled with great galleries, tailors, restaurants, the Royal Academy, and the Royal Academy Schools. It has an unmistakable identity and elegance, and this historical building offers something distinct to the exhibition options available to our artists. A demonstration of our commitment to London, it is my hope that this new gallery promises dynamic possibilities for future adventures with artists.”
