An Ting Teng (b.1995 in Taipei, Taiwan) is a London-based artist whose work delves into the interplay between tranquillity and change in an ever-evolving world. Her artistic practice spans multiple mediums, including collections, sculpture, installation, alternative photographic processes, and bookmaking. With a foundation in nature and artificial objects, An creates works that merge individual elements into collective narratives. These stories explore the intricate relationships between materials, landscapes, and our connections with nature.

An holds a Master’s in Photography from the Royal College of Art and has exhibited her work internationally in Taiwan, China, the United Kingdom, and Denmark. Notably, her recent work was showcased at the Charlottenborg Forårsudstilling 2024 at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Recent Residency & Exhibition: Remembered Lands

At the beginning of 2024, An participated in the Art Hub Studios Darkroom Residency, where she was one of four selected photographers to explore the narrative potential of darkroom practices. This residency culminates in the group exhibition Remembered Lands at Photobook Cafe, Shoreditch, from October 3rd–6th, 2024. The exhibition presents poignant and experimental works reflecting on themes of family, ritual, colonialism, and humanity’s relationship with the land.

Selected Works

An Ting Teng The Three Kings (2024) Mixed media, liquid emulsion, paper, marble, stone, wood, clay

Created during her Art Hub Studios residency, The Three Kings builds on An’s previous series A Stone within a Mountain, a Mountain within a Stone. This work explores themes of time, materiality, and transformation through alternative photographic processes such as liquid light. By crafting her own photographic paper and gathering rocks from various British landscapes, An reflects on geological and existential timescales, raising profound questions about endurance, identity, and the passage of time.

An Ting Teng, A Stone within a Mountain, a Mountain within a Stone (2024)Mixed media, liquid emulsion, marble, stone, wood, paper

In the series A Stone within a Mountain, a Mountain within a Stone An juxtaposes fleeting photographic moments with the enduring nature of marble, a material shaped over millions of years. Using alternative processes to imprint images of trees, mountains, and water onto marble surfaces, An creates works that blur the lines between photography, painting, and sculpture. The series underscores the tension between human intervention and natural transformation, symbolizing the interconnectedness of time and materiality.

Self-published, inkjet print on rice paper, hand-made, 12 pages, edition of 30

This publication revisits test strips from An’s darkroom process, showcasing their fragile textures and irregular forms. By presenting these strips on rice paper, An reframes them as central to her exploration, inviting viewers to rediscover the landscapes and stories contained within. This hand-bound, limited-edition book highlights the interplay between completion and incompleteness, memory and materiality.

An Ting’s work is deeply rooted in the slow processes of creation, emphasizing the material and philosophical connections between organic and inorganic forms.
