It’s an art exhibition! It’s a shop! ‘Multiple Universe’

Assembly Line and Union Gallery are happy to present ‘Multiple Universe’ an exhibition of bespoke art multiples alongside unique works by artists responding to an Assembly Line brief. Asking ‘why make more than one?’ the exhibition examines how the art world interacts with retail and how artists can survive within this market. It’s an art exhibition. It’s a shop. What’s the difference?

Sunrise (Factory Reset) is the fourth iteration of Shane Bradford’s dipped car series. An edition of 31, the set is a sister to our very first Twilight (Factory Reset) edition, 2020. Vintage die-cast model cars, rescued from obscurity, are subjected to Bradford’s signature ‘dip’ process whereby repeated submersions in tinted emulsions form a stalactite motion drip. In a highly satisfying nexus of object and idea these paintings in the expanded field carry the Assembly Line ethos of ‘multiples driven by multiplicity’ exceedingly well…

In Multiple Universe artists respond to the question of multiplicity in art-making, aiming to re-evaluate the notion of the art multiple and the edition in relation to the proliferation of screen-based media, Web3, and the NFT. The exhibition questions the future of physical art made to be seen, touched, and used in the world when surrounded by ever-expanding digital spaces. By showing the works in their original groupings, the exhibition emphasises their plurality whilst purposefully raising awareness of the exhibition as a commercial space, taking a fresh look at arts relationship with commerce. ‘Multiple Universe’ features work from established artists, Ben Cain, Benedikt Hipp, Rose Eken, Kate Street, Shane Bradford, and Amba Sayal-Bennett.

Opening Saturday 4th February 2023, 6-9pm. UNION Gallery, 94 Teesdale Street, London E2 6PU
