From creating maps from cane rows to exploring protective styles that care for afro hair; braiding, locking and twisting are art forms with a rich cultural history of resistance and celebration. One Big Chop opens up conversations around the current sociopolitical landscape of Black people living in the UK through the metaphor and processes involved in maintaining black hair. Charli Payne invites the viewer into an immersive space referencing a Black-British family home. Dreadlocks are connected to performers and span the space interlocking their minds with the architecture in the space and growing out onto the street of the gallery.
